Behind it stands: Robert Atkins
What "work" this diet? Dr. Atkins believed that too many carbohydrates causes the body to produce too much insulin and this in turn causes hunger and from there ... weight gain. His diet allows only between 15-60 grams. daily carbohydrates, including pasta, bread and fruit, but it encourages the use of protein and fat. The diet works on the principle that reducing foods high in carbohydrates, metabolism can be improved and thus reduce weight.
What critics say: Dr. Atkins was abnormally thick when he died. Dietetic Dr Susan Jebb diet condemns as "nonsense and pseudo-science." Health psychologist Dr Jane Ogden describes the proponents of the diet as "naive."
